The Borgo
The ancient borgo of Rollo is located on the slopes of Capo Cervo and dominates the entire Gulf of Andora, with a suggestive view of it which makes it a privileged panoramic point for tourists. It rises between 140 and over 200 meters above sea level, along the slope of a sunny slope in a landscape of terraces cultivated with olive trees (the so-called "fasce"), on the route of the so-called "Roman Road", or the Via Ligure Costiera, a route of presumed pre-Roman origin which, starting from the marina, passed Capo Cervo just above the current Strada Statale Aurelia, and whose remains can still be traveled downstream from the town.
Church of the Santissima Trinità
(Holy Trinity)
In a position below the Castle is the Church of the SS. Trinità, rebuilt in Baroque style between 1606 and 1634 on a pre-existing chapel, with a beautiful example of a Ligurian bell tower on the outside and an admirable interior in which an imposing altar in inlaid marble stands out; on the opposite side of the small square in front of the church there is a superb baroque arch, a driveway entrance to an ancient noble residence, located next to the "alley" belonging to the town, perhaps dating back in its current guise to the century. 17th-18th century, where precious frescoes are still preserved today.
Casaforte "Oratorio of San Giovanni Decollato"
The origins of this center must date back at least to the medieval age, as part of a defensive stronghold protected from raids and incursions. In fact, near Rollo, the ancient Priory of the Benedictine monks of San Martino was built, owned in the Middle Ages by the Abbey of Gallinara Island; No trace remains of the religious building and the buildings connected to it.
The fifteenth-century castle, a massive parallelepiped characterized by a high escarpment base and with round watchtowers at the corners, former seat of the magistrate's court and current rectory, constitutes one of the best preserved examples of the characteristic military architecture of the Ligurian coast, placed to defend against Barbary attacks.
The locations of Rollo
In Giustiniani's annals it appears that in 1535 the village had twenty-two "fires" (therefore at least a hundred people), a quota that was certainly exceeded in the following centuries, given the extension of the town and the presence of buildings of considerable importance.
Throughout the modern age, Rollo remained administratively linked to the other centers of Val Merula, belonging to the district of San Giovanni Battista, one of the five in the Andorese area. Its importance, however, grew in 1666 when, to crown the ambitions of what must have been a small but very prosperous community, its oratory was elevated to a full parish.
The borgo is made up of three main nuclei.
The two smaller nuclei, located in the highest area, are older, given the typology of the buildings. They are called Ca' delle "Bande di Là", i.e. the lands beyond the main nucleus, and Ca' Berneri, a probable memory of the family once resident there.
